Study of the Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on the Eustachian Tube Function

Abstract
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is an important mode of adjuvant therapy for disease processes such as decompression sickness, osteomyelitis, carbon monoxide poisoning, and poorly healing wounds with intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen under a
pressure greater than 1 atm. But during this therapy, patients often complain of ear fullness, otalgia, and what is more, are affected by SOM So we performed this study to determine the changes of eustachian tube function before and after HBO
treatment
and identify potential
@ES groups for developing middle ear disease. The results were as follows
@EN 1. In the analysis of 60 normal volunteers' 120 ears, 54 persons' 104ears(86.7%) developed ear fullness, 22 persons' 38 ears )31.7%) developed moderate otalgia, 10 persons' 12 ears (10%) developed SOM and 18 persons' 25 ears (20.8%) were
required
myringotomy and ventilation tube due to severe otalgia.
2. Among 10 of 60 persons presented with a subjective history of E tube dysfunction and 18 ears (90%) of 10 persons develloped fullness 13 ears (65%)developed severe otalgia and 12 ears (60%) developed SOM after HBO therapy. So the incidence of
ear
symptoms was significantly high in past history group of E-tube dysfunction.
3. The incidence of severe otalgia or SOM was significantly high in E-tube dysfunction group after HBO.
4. The Valsalva maneuver and nasal decongestants decrease the incidence of ear symptoms.
